In Virginia, parents have a legal obligation to provide support to their children.
How is the Amount Determined?Virginia Code § 20-108.2 is the Virginia law governing child support. The law requires judges to use a specific method to calculate child support. In many cases, our attorneys will be able to provide you with the exact amount that a court would award in child support. If there is a dispute over how much a parent is earning (or should be earning), when the reasoanbleness of child care costs is in question, when a child has special needs, when there are excessive transportation costs, when a child has special education needs, or when a parent may have other children living with him or her, difficult legal issues need to be resolved. If you or the other parent is self-employed, the calculation of child support becomes much more complex, and the knowledge and experience of a skilled attorney can be an invaluable asset.
Our ExperienceOur attorneys have handled hundreds of family law cases, in the Virginia Court of Appeals and in circuit courts and juvenile courts across Virginia. Our attorneys also have over a decade of business law experience, which gives us a unique advantage if either parent is self-employed. Our attorneys are also frequent lecturers on family law matters.
